Igreja da Misericordia (Misericordia Church), Aveiro
The Misericordia Church has its origins in the ambitious architectural vision of the Italian architect Filipo Terzi, who crafted the initial project in 1585. However, the realization of this design only came to fruition in 1653, under the skilled guidance of Portuguese master Manuel Azenha.
The church's facade, adorned with 17th-century tiles and later baroque embellishments in limestone, features a grand portal with a classical aesthetic. The portal, situated between four Corinthian columns, showcases niches containing images. Above, windows replaced the original figures, culminating in the stone image of Our Lady of Mercy at the center. The facade is adorned with the royal shield, the Cross of Christ, and an armillary sphere.
Upon entering the church, visitors are greeted by a sense of rigid grandeur. The nave is characterized by its length and height, with 19th-century patterned tiles adding to the visual appeal and historical richness. In the main chapel, attention is drawn to the paneled vault, constructed from Ançã stone-an abundant regional material utilized in numerous local monuments. The stone is a distinctive feature of this part of Portugal's architectural heritage.
Additionally, the altarpiece within the church is of particular interest. It captivates with its replication of the design and decoration found on the facade's portal, creating a harmonious connection between the interior and exterior elements of the Misericordia Church.
