Jardin des Plantes de Rouen (Rouen Botanical Garden), Rouen

The Rouen Botanical Garden offers visitors eight hectares of accessible green space out of its total eight and a half hectares. The garden is home to around 5,600 plant species. It is also notable for its extensive fuchsia collection, which includes 991 species and varieties recognized with the "National Collection" label by the Conservatory of Specialized Plant Collections.

The garden features several historical structures, like the late 17th-century pavilion built by Louis de Carel, now used for temporary exhibitions, and the Orangery, constructed in 1895-1896, also hosting exhibitions. At the heart of the garden, the central greenhouse (constructed between 1839-1842) stands out, having been listed as a historic monument since 1975 and restored in 1999. The garden also includes a series of tropical greenhouses and seven other greenhouses, all of which were rebuilt in 2020; one of these offers workshops for children.

Adding to the garden’s attractions, a large perspective stretches from the Grande Serre to the Place des Martyrs-de-la-Résistance, featuring a butterfly mosaic along the way. There is also a rose garden covering 670 square meters, showcasing various rose subspecies, including those bred by Norman rose growers. An 18th-century press from Tourville-sur-Pont-Audemer, dedicated to Charles-Victor Langlois, a Rouen native and former director of the Archives of France, was rebuilt on the premises in 1996.

Visitors can enjoy sightings of various birds like parakeets, parrots, Chinese quails, and golden pheasants. Recognized both for its botanical diversity and landscaped features, the garden includes an orangery, tropical greenhouses, a conservatory orchard, rockeries, and a collection of medicinal plants. It was awarded the national garden label by the Association of Botanical Gardens of France and French-speaking countries in 2004.
