Juneau-Douglas City Museum, Juneau

The Juneau-Douglas City Museum, located across from the Alaska State Capitol, explores the history, culture, and development of Alaska’s capital city. The museum is housed in a Classical Revival building that was originally constructed between 1950 and 1951 as the Juneau Memorial Library. Built of concrete with red marble accents, the structure features a recessed entrance, a pedimented central section, and tall windows that reflect the architectural style of mid-20th-century civic buildings.

The museum’s exhibits examine the events and industries that shaped Juneau and the surrounding region. Displays explore the city’s gold mining origins, the development of local industries such as hydropower, and the role of fishing, skiing, and other outdoor activities in community life. Visitors can also learn about Juneau’s political history, social changes, and everyday experiences through photographs, artifacts, artwork, and rotating exhibits. A stained-glass window from the former library remains one of the building’s notable interior features.

After serving as Juneau’s main public library for several decades, the building was converted into the city museum in the 1980s. The transition preserved the structure’s role as a public space while giving it a new purpose as a center for local history and education. Recognized for its architectural and historical value, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
