La Maternidad (The Motherhood), Oviedo

La Maternidad (The Motherhood), Oviedo

La Maternidad sculpture is located in the Plaza de la Escandalera, between the historic and commercial centers of the city, a very busy place. “La Maternidad” is translated from Spanish as “motherhood”. The name perfectly represents the message of the composition, it depicts a mother with a little boy on her knees. The statue was created by Fernando Botero Angul, Colombian figurative artist.

The sculpture represents the artistic tendency called "Boterismo". Botero depicts women, men, daily life, historical events and characters, milestones of art, still-life, animals and the natural world in general, with exaggerated and disproportionate volumetry, accompanied by fine details of scathing criticism, irony, humor, and ingenuity. La Maternidad was installed in 1996, it is 2.46 meters high, made of perfectly polished brass. The locals call this statue “La Gorda”, what can be directly translated as “fat woman”.
