Le Nomade (Nomade Sculpture), Antibes (must see)
The Nomad is one of the most recognizable modern landmarks in Antibes. Created by the Catalan artist Jaume Plensa, this monumental sculpture stands on the top terrace of Saint Jaume Bastion, beside Vauban Port and close to the old ramparts. It first appeared here as part of a temporary exhibition in 2007 and later became a permanent installation in 2010. Its setting is a big part of the experience: the sculpture faces the sea and has become a familiar visual marker at the edge of the historic town.
As you approach the terrace, the first thing you notice is the sculpture’s unusual form. The Nomad is an eight-meter-high seated human figure, but instead of being solid, it is made from a lace-like framework of white steel letters. This gives it a light, open appearance that changes depending on the sky, the weather, and the angle from which you see it. If you look at it from nearby, the letters become more visible as individual shapes; from farther away, they come together into the outline of a calm, seated figure.
One of the most interesting parts of the visit is that you can step inside the sculpture. From within, the work feels completely different: the sea, the port, and the sky appear through the gaps between the letters, and the interior has a quiet, sheltered feeling despite being fully open to the air. Plensa described the work as something that invites visitors to travel within it, and that idea makes sense once you are standing inside and looking out through the structure toward the Mediterranean.
The location adds even more interest. From the bastion terrace, visitors can look out over Vauban Port, the yachts below, the coastline, and the old fortifications of Antibes. The site itself also has a layered history: before the present bastion, this area had earlier religious and defensive structures, and later it was adapted for shipbuilding. That mix of modern sculpture, military architecture, and sea views is what makes The Nomad such a memorable stop in Antibes.
