Le Pont Kennedy, Strasbourg
The Kennedy Bridge is located in Strasbourg, close to the Consulate General of the United States of America on avenue d’Alsace. Among the locals, it is known as The Bridge of 4 Giants. Initially, the bridge was named Black Forest Bridge (Schwarzwaldbrücke), then it was called Pont Brant until 1965. Yet, for locals, it is still known as The Bridge of 4 Giants, highlighting the remarkable statues at its entrances. The connection to John Fitzgerald Kennedy's name comes from the proximity of the United States Consulate nearby.
The construction of this bridge was undertaken by Fritz Beblo in 1906, featuring a single low arch spanning thirty meters. It connects avenue de la Forêt-Noire to avenue d'Alsace, boasting a solid pink cut stone parapet from Lutzelbourg. The bridge is adorned with subtle designs, including wavy patterns on the roadway side and sinuous fish on the riverside. Nevertheless, the main highlight is the presence of four sculptures positioned at each end, crafted by the sculptor Alfred Marzolff: a laborer and a hauler on the avenue d'Alsace side, and two fishermen on the place Brant side.
