Mabry-Hazen House Museum, Knoxville

Mabry-Hazen House Museum, Knoxville

Located on an 8-acre (3.2 ha) plot on Dandridge Avenue in Knoxville, at the crest of Mabry's Hill, the Mabry-Hazen House is a historical residence. Constructed in 1858 for Joseph Alexander Mabry II and initially called Pine Hill Cottage, it also goes by the name of the Evelyn Hazen House or the Joseph Alexander Mabry Jr. House. At the time of its construction, the house was situated in what was then the independent town of East Knoxville. The building features elements of both Greek Revival and Italianate architecture, with the size of the first floor enlarged by expansions in 1886.

Since the death of Evelyn Hazen, the house has been in operation as a museum, preserving its original furniture and family collections, including antique china and crystal. The museum houses over 2,000 original artifacts, making it the largest original family collection in America. The house is registered on the National Register of Historic Places.

During the American Civil War, Joseph Mabry II, a wealthy Knoxville merchant, equipped an entire regiment of Confederate soldiers. In recognition of his contribution, he was given the honorary title of General in the Confederate army. The strategic location of his house adjacent to Fort Hill was occupied by both Union and Confederate forces during the war. Confederate General Felix Zollicoffer used the house as his headquarters in 1861, but it was the Union forces who made the most significant impact when they fortified the grounds as part of their Knoxville defenses after taking control of the city.

Mabry passed away in 1882, after which his daughter, Alice Evelyn Mabry, and her spouse, Rush Strong Hazen, resided in the house. Their youngest daughter, Evelyn Hazen, occupied the house alone until she died in 1987. She will state that the house must either become a museum or be demolished. The house opened as a museum in 1992.
