Madonna Inn, San Luis Obispo

The Madonna Inn is a legendary motel that has been captivating visitors since its opening in 1958. This charming establishment quickly gained fame as a beloved landmark on the Central Coast of California, thanks to its distinctive decor, iconic pink dining room, and creatively themed rooms.

The vision for the Madonna Inn was brought to life by Alex Madonna, a renowned construction magnate and entrepreneur, along with his wife Phyllis. The motel opened its doors on December 24, 1958, with twelve rooms available for guests. The Madonnas were so thrilled to have their first guest that they refunded his $7 room rental, a gesture that reflected their genuine enthusiasm for hospitality.

The popularity of the Madonna Inn soared, prompting the expansion of the motel to forty rooms in 1959. The iconic Inn facility itself was constructed in 1960, further solidifying its status as a cherished destination. Even renowned architect Richard Neutra, who stayed at the Inn, marveled at its design.

In May 1966, a devastating fire ravaged the Inn's original units, leaving the owners and guests in disbelief. However, the Madonnas were determined to rebuild, and a year later, the Madonna Inn reopened its doors. By the end of the decade, all the rooms had been reconstructed in the distinctive style for which the Inn is now known.

The Madonna Inn is not only a motel but also features a delightful restaurant and bakery. The exterior of the property is adorned with a whimsical pseudo-Swiss-Alps design, complemented by lavish common rooms adorned with pink roses, Western murals, and hammered copper accents. Pink is the predominant color, extending even to the lamp posts and trash cans, creating a uniquely charming atmosphere.

The architectural marvel of the Madonna Inn extends beyond its decor. Enormous boulders, weighing up to 209 short tons for the exterior and 15 short tons for the interior, have been used in its construction. These massive stones add a sense of grandeur and uniqueness to the overall ambiance.
