Maine Jewish Museum, Portland
The Maine Jewish Museum located in Portland is a testament to the dedication and vision of a small group of individuals who sought to preserve the rich history, art, and culture of Maine's Jewish community. In 2005, led by Founding President Jody Sataloff and Founding Executive Director Rabbi Gary Berenson, this group embarked on a mission to restore the Etz Chaim Synagogue facility to its former grandeur and transform it into a museum.
The Maine Jewish Museum serves as a celebration and tribute to the contributions and diversity of Maine's Jewish immigrants, within the broader context of the American experience. Through its exhibits, programming, and dialogue, the museum strives to foster appreciation and understanding among people of all backgrounds, building bridges of connection and mutual respect.
In 2008, the Maine Jewish Museum opened its doors to the public, showcasing its collections and exhibitions within the newly renovated synagogue. As of 2021, the museum is celebrating its 13th birthday, marking a significant milestone in its continued success.
One notable addition to the museum in 2018 was the establishment of the Maine Jewish Hall of Fame. This initiative aims to recognize outstanding Jewish leaders from Maine who have brought honor and distinction to the state and beyond. Each year, a new class is inducted into the Hall of Fame, as determined by the Nominating Committee.
Alongside the growth of the museum, the Etz Chaim Synagogue has experienced a revival. It now welcomes a vibrant community of 250-300 people during high holiday services and holds weekly services on Mondays and Saturdays, with an additional Friday night service once a month.
