Matthaei Botanical Gardens, Ann Arbor (must see)
Nestled on 300 acres provided by the generous donation of Frederick C. Matthaei Sr. and his wife Mildred, the Matthaei Botanical Gardens is a living, breathing tribute to the intersection of nature, education, and community. Operated by the University of Michigan, the site encompasses eleven beautifully curated outdoor gardens-ranging from a Tudor-inspired herb knot to a rock garden-as well as nearly three miles of trails winding through woodlands, wetlands, tallgrass prairie, and ponds. It’s a serene refuge for plant lovers and casual visitors alike.
At its heart, the 10,000 square feet conservatory-designed in 1964 by Alden Dow-is believed to be the largest university-affiliated display greenhouse in the country. Divided into tropical, temperate, and arid houses, it showcases an impressive collection: orchids, coffee and cacao plants, bonsai trees, succulents, cacti, and more. Outdoor highlights include a Bonsai Garden, the colourful Gateway Garden, the Alexandra Hicks Herb Knot Garden, and the Marie Azary Rock Garden.
The grounds extend far beyond ornamental displays. Miles of trails-such as the Dix Pond, Fleming Creek, Sam Graham Trees, and Marilyn Bland Prairie Trails-invite walkers to experience Michigan’s diverse habitats firsthand. Nearby, the Nichols Arboretum adds another layer of discovery, featuring hilly landscapes, a renowned heirloom peony garden, and a rich collection of native and exotic trees.
Trails and natural areas remain accessible daily from sunrise to sunset. As a hub for research, conservation, classes, and special events, Matthaei Botanical Gardens offers a meditative stroll, an educational outing, and a celebrated community landmark-all in one graceful green space.
