Midtown Global Market, Minneapolis
The Midtown Greenway winds through South Minneapolis, carving a 5.5-mile, rail-side path from the lakes to the Mississippi River. Cyclists, families, and commuters alike cherish this nearly flat corridor, which planners hope will one day extend across the river to St. Paul. Along the route, you’ll find plenty of places to pause for a snack or a drink-like the renowned Midtown Global Market.
This vibrant marketplace rose from the ashes of a massive 1.2-million-square-foot catalog order-processing facility, which closed in 1994. Minneapolis pondered what to do with the state’s second-largest building (outmatched only by the Mall of America) until 2006, when the Midtown Global Market opened its doors. Its ground floor hums with activity, while condos and offices fill the upper levels. Inspired by celebrated community markets like Seattle’s Pike Place, it became a collaboration among neighborhood groups, the African Development Center, and the Latino Economic Development Center.
Today, the Midtown Global Market offers a smorgasbord of international flavors. Strolling through, you’ll find Latin favorites like Manny’s Tortas and plenty of other cuisines to satisfy even the pickiest eaters. Beyond food, the market hosts an array of specialty shops, ethnic grocers, jewelry vendors, and artisans from around the globe. A central stage often features live music, and a small children’s play area helps keep the littlest visitors entertained.
