Miejska Hala Targowa (Municipal Market Hall), Gdynia
The Municipal Market Hall in Gdynia is a historic complex of trading halls located right in the heart of the city. Built between 1935 and 1938 based on designs by Jerzy Müller and Stefan Reychman, the complex is one of the rare examples of constructivist architecture in Poland. It includes three main halls: the largest is the Arched Hall (fruit and vegetable market), which is connected in an L-shape to the Meat Hall, while the Fish Hall stands separately. The impressive arched roof of the main hall is supported by steel arches and ceramic infill in the Forster system, and is said to have been inspired by Le Corbusier's Orly Airport hangar.
More than just a piece of architectural heritage, the Market Hall is a lively commercial hub that continues to serve locals and tourists alike. It's a place where tradition and daily life come together, offering shoppers direct contact with merchants, fresh local produce, and a sense of community that’s hard to find in modern supermarkets. From chatting with fishmongers to sampling regional cheeses or buying freshly baked bread, shopping here is a personal and nostalgic experience-often described as “shopping with a human face.”
Today, the Market Hall is not just a spot for groceries-it's also popular among bargain hunters and visitors, especially from Sweden, looking for good deals on clothing, electronics, and household items. The complex stands as a living monument to Gdynia's pre-war vision of modern urban design, while offering a rare glimpse into everyday life in post-communist Poland before shopping malls took over.
