Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park, St. Georges

Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park, St. Georges

The Molinere Bay Underwater Sculpture Park stands as a unique and captivating testament to the intersection of art, conservation, and marine ecology in the Caribbean Sea off the west coast of Grenada. Created by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, this extraordinary underwater gallery was officially opened to the public in May 2006, marking the world's first underwater sculpture park.

Taylor's vision for the sculpture park was twofold: to engage local communities with their marine environment and to provide relief to natural reefs by diverting tourist pressure. To achieve this, Taylor crafted a series of striking concrete sculptures inspired by life casts of the local community. The sculptures, ranging from solitary figures to groups of children holding hands, were installed on the sandy ocean floor of Molinere Bay, creating a mesmerizing underwater landscape.

Today, the Molinere Bay Underwater Sculpture Park spans over 800 square meters and features more than sixty-five individual sculptures, collectively weighing around 15 tonnes in dry cement. Situated at various depths, with a maximum of 12 meters, the sculptures offer a dynamic and immersive experience for divers, snorkelers, and glass-bottom boat tours.

The sculpture park has become a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts, drawing visitors from around the world to explore its underwater wonders. Nearby Flamingo Bay, renowned as the most visited snorkeling destination on the island, provides easy access to the sculpture park, making it a must-visit attraction for travelers seeking adventure and discovery.

Accessible via boat from the main port of St. George's or Grand Anse Bay on the west coastline, the Molinere Bay Underwater Sculpture Park welcomes visitors daily, offering a glimpse into a world where art and nature converge beneath the waves. Over the years, the park has evolved, with local artists contributing new works to enrich the underwater gallery and further enhance its cultural and ecological significance.
