Musee du Vieil-Aix (Old Aix Museum), Aix-en-Provence
The Musée du Vieil-Aix is a small local history museum set in a 17th-century townhouse. It was donated to the city in 1922 by Marie d’Estienne de Saint-Jean and opened in 1932, with help from folklorist Marcel Provence. The building still keeps original features like a central staircase and painted ceilings, showing how a private home was arranged.
Inside, the collections focus on daily life and local traditions, with furniture, tools, ceramics, and clothing from earlier centuries. One section shows traditional Provençal costumes worn for festivals. The museum is also known for its santons and a rare 19th-century “talking nativity scene” with moving wooden puppets, as well as a 17th-century model by G.B. Gaulli (Baciccio) made for a baptistery project in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
The museum also presents information about a 15th-century triptych, The Annunciation, painted by Barthélémy d’Eyck around 1443–1445 and commissioned by the merchant Pierre Corpici, though the original work is not kept in the museum. Some rooms are arranged like old interiors, helping visitors understand how people lived through furniture and everyday objects.

Aix-en-Provence Introduction Walking Tour
Aix-en-Provence may not have coastal views, but it compensates in style with its Roman bathwater and city logistics. Founded in 123 BC by Roman consul Gaius Sextius Calvinus, this southern French settlement-originally named Aquae Sextiae, which means “Waters of Sextius”-was built around its thermal springs and the promise of a good soak. Centuries later, the name was streamlined to “Aix”,... view more

In the Footsteps of Paul Cézanne
Paul Cézanne, often called the “father of modern art” for bridging 19th-century post-impressionism and the birth of early modernism, caused a bit of a stir early in his career. While staying with Doctor Gachet in Auvers-sur-Oise, he painted his take on Manet’s Olympia-but with a twist. Instead of just a reclining nude, Cézanne inserted himself into the scene, back turned, like a shy... view more

Aix-en-Provence Fountains and Squares Tour
Aix-end-Provence is known for its fountains. With more than 1,000 fountains, a tourist could spend weeks walking around the city without glimpsing them all. The fountains began appearing under the Roman empire when the Romans discovered Aix's natural thermal water source. They referred to the area as Aquae Sextiae or the Waters of Sextius.
