Museum am Dom (Museum at the Cathedral), Wurzburg
The Museum at the Cathedral is an art museum of the Diocese of Würzburg, inaugurated in March 2003 under Bishop Paul-Werner Scheele. The artworks in the entrance hall explore fundamental human experiences like fall and rise, light and darkness, hope and despair, joy and sorrow, and the connection between heaven and earth.
Its permanent collection showcases around 300 paintings and sculptures spanning from the 10th to the 21st century. Modern and contemporary artists such as Ernst Barlach, Joseph Beuys, Willi Dirx, Otto Dix, Dina Draeger, Lars Käker, Käthe Kollwitz, Wolfgang Mattheuer, Werner Tübke, and Andy Warhol are displayed alongside works by old masters, including Tilman Riemenschneider, Georg Anton Urlaub, Johann Peter Wagner, and Johann Zick. The museum occupies four floors of the Kilianshaus, which underwent extensive renovation and reconstruction between 2001 and 2003. It is situated on Kiliansplatz, nestled between Würzburg Cathedral and Neumünster.
Historically, the area between the cathedral and Neumünster was known as the Leichhof, serving as a cemetery for the dead of Saint Kilian’s cathedral parish and houses associated with Neumünster until the mid-16th century. A Salhof also existed in this space, whose well shaft was repurposed as a latrine in the 13th century, where various objects were discovered, shedding light on everyday life during the Middle Ages.

Wurzburg Introduction Walking Tour
The old Franconian episcopal city and university town of Würzburg in the German state of Bavaria boasts a history dating back to the Bronze Age. Originally, the Leistenberg hill presently occupied by Marienberg Fortress was home to a Celtic and later a Roman fort. In the 4th-5th centuries AD, Alamanni settled in the area, followed by the Franks in the 6th-7th centuries.
