National Gallery of Jamaica, Kingston

National Gallery of Jamaica, Kingston

Situated in Kingston, the National Gallery of Jamaica stands as the nation's esteemed public art museum. Since its establishment in 1974, the gallery has found its home within the bustling Kingston Mall-a vibrant hub of commerce and culture nestled along the shores of Kingston Harbor. Complementing its main location, the National Gallery of Jamaica extends its reach to Montego Bay with the presence of the National Gallery West.

Within its walls, the gallery proudly showcases a multitude of significant works primarily created by Jamaican artists. Renowned artists such as John Dunkley, Mallica "Kapo" Reynolds, Edna Manley, and Barrington Watson contribute to the rich tapestry of artistic expression exhibited here.

One of the must-see artworks inside the museum is “Negro Aroused” by Edna Manley. This mahogany sculpture is the defining symbol of the Jamaican nationalist movement and the “dawn” of modern Jamaican art. It represents the awakening of Jamaican consciousness during the socio-political shifts of the 1930s. Conveniently, the sculpture marks the start of the main permanent exhibition, titled “Art in Jamaica: The 20th Century.” To find it, look for the central “meandering” staircase on the ground floor. At the top of the stairs, you will see the entrance alcove to the main exhibition. Positioned prominently in this alcove, mounted on a unique wild tamarind wood table, is the statue.

Once you pass the “Negro Aroused” sculpture, the permanent galleries typically follow a clockwise circuit. At the far end of the upper floor, the Kapo Galleries await. The collection is named after Mallica “Kapo” Reynolds, Jamaica’s most celebrated “Intuitive” (or, more plainly said, self-taught) artist. His collection is world-renowned for its deep connection to Afro-Jamaican spirituality, and it features nearly 70 works, including his signature dark-wood carvings and vibrant, spiritually charged paintings like “There She Go Satan.”

While celebrating Jamaica's artistic heritage, the National Gallery also embraces the global artistic community by featuring works from diverse international artists and hosting traveling exhibitions. Moreover, it serves as a valuable resource center for research material on Jamaican art and culture, while simultaneously coordinating educational programs that foster an appreciation for the arts.
