Orlowo Pier, Gdynia

Orlowo Pier, Gdynia

Orlowo Pier, a beloved wooden structure in Gdynia’s southern district, has a long and varied history dating back to World War I, when it was originally built as a pleasure pier for a nearby resort. During the 1920s, as Orlowo’s popularity grew, the pier was expanded to 115 meters, allowing small passenger boats to dock. By the late 1920s, in an effort to rival the resort town of Sopot, the pier was further extended to 430 meters, making it a significant feature of the Baltic coastline. However, a devastating storm in 1949 destroyed much of the structure, and by 1953, only 180 meters remained, which is the length visitors see today.

Despite its shorter size, Orlowo Pier remains a scenic gem of Gdynia, offering stunning views of Orlowo Cliff, which rises dramatically behind the nearby beach. The pier serves as a tranquil promenade, free to enter and perfect for an afternoon stroll or quiet reflection by the sea. Visitors can sit on the pier’s benches, breathe in the fresh Baltic air, and take in the panoramic beauty of the coastline. The Summer Stage of the Gdynia Theatre, located nearby, adds a cultural touch to the area, making the pier not only a natural retreat but also a spot for artistic performances in the warmer months.

While the immediate surroundings remain relatively quiet, the area around Orlowo Pier has a handful of taverns and seaside restaurants where visitors can enjoy a meal with a view. For those looking for a bit more adventure, a hike up Orlowo Cliff offers breathtaking views of the Baltic Sea, while a leisurely walk along the shoreline toward Sopot allows travelers to experience the beauty of Poland’s northern coast.
