Palais Lantivy (Lantivy Palace), Ajaccio
The Lantivy Palace is a Neoclassical architectural gem, built between 1826 and 1830 based on designs by Alphonse de Gisors. Originally constructed as a governmental building, it now serves as the Corsican Prefecture, housing the administration of Corse-du-Sud. Recognized as a historical monument in 1990, the palace stands as a symbol of Ajaccio’s political and administrative history.
The rectangular structure features two floors, a central atrium, and a grand neoclassical façade flanked by two wings. Inside, a deliberation room sits above the entrance hall, accessible via a grand staircase. Notable decorative elements include a fresco of Aurora riding a chariot, adding to the elegance of the space. The west side of the palace contains the prefect’s private apartments, including a living room, dining area, and office, all overlooking a lush Mediterranean garden.
Surrounding the palace is a well-maintained garden with palm trees, cedrat trees, and other Mediterranean and tropical species. The entrance hall houses a 5th-century Carrara marble sarcophagus, discovered in 1934 in the Saint Jean district. While the Lantivy Palace is primarily a government building, it opens to the public during Heritage Days, offering visitors a glimpse into Corsica’s administrative and historical past.
