Parcul Sub Arini (Under the Alders Park), Sibiu
Under the Alders Park is one of Romania's oldest parks, established by the municipality between 1856 and 1865 on a 22-hectare area. The park's development was overseen by engineer Wolfgang Seifried. Between 1857 and 1858, the two main alleys were laid out along the former ditch of the Swimming School and the Seviş stream. Various tree species were planted, with alders being the most prominent. The dike was completed in 1859, and a bridge over the Trinbach brook followed in 1860. By 1865, the Sub Arini Restaurant (now Bolta Rece) opened.
Since 1881, the Society for the Beautification of the City has managed the park, planting additional trees. A greenhouse was built in 1883, and the first artesian fountain was installed in 1894. The music pavilion, completed in 1898, hosted Sunday performances by the military band. Electric lighting was introduced in 1904. The municipal stadium, initially named the Physical Education Stadium, was inaugurated in 1927 on the park's southern edge. Between 1977 and 1981, the stadium was expanded with concrete stands for 12,000 spectators, and its capacity was increased to 24,000 in 1982.
The bust of Mihai Eminescu, created by sculptor Radu Moga, was unveiled in 1938. In 1979, the municipality began paving the main alleys, replaced the old music pavilion, and refurbished the artesian fountain. During this period, children's playgrounds were also added. Today, the park boasts 68 plant species (including around 30 exotic varieties) and 95 species of sedentary or migratory birds. Visitors can admire native trees like alders, linden, chestnuts, sycamores, and others over 150 years old, alongside North American species like blue spruce, white pine, walnut, rock maple, tsuga, red cedar, Douglas fir, and trees from the Far East such as Japanese barberry, ginkgo biloba, and Caucasian fir.
