Originally established in 1989 as a charity with a mission to make inspiring film and art accessible to all, Phoenix offers a diverse program that spans everything from micro-budget independent films to the latest Hollywood releases. In addition to its screenings, the center's education program provides workshops and short courses, empowering individuals to learn about filmmaking and create their own works.

Phoenix has a long-standing legacy in Leicester. Its origins trace back to 1963 when it first opened as the Phoenix Theatre on Upper Brown Street. Over the years, it has evolved into a leading venue for film and digital media, formerly known as Phoenix Square and previously referred to as the Leicester Digital Media Centre.
