Pretoria National Botanical Garden, Pretoria
The Pretoria National Botanical Garden is one of South Africa's nine National Botanical Gardens. Spanning 76 hectares, this green haven was established in 1946. Initially focused on research and managed by the Botanical Research Institute, it evolved over time, merging with the National Botanical Gardens of South Africa to form the National Botanical Institute in 1989, later becoming the South African National Biodiversity Institute in 2004.
Accessible to the public since 1984, the garden's western section boasts a range of attractions, including wetlands, cycad and succulent gardens, and facilities like a restaurant and function hall. A notable feature is the Bolusanthus speciosus tree-lined avenue, planted in 1946 by Mr. Jan Evens.
At the heart of the garden lies the National Herbarium, Biodiversity Centre, and Environmental Education Centre, while to the north stands Aloe Lodge, earmarked for specific conservation programs. On the eastern side, a more naturalistic setting unfolds, with an arboretum, grasslands, and walking trails, complemented by garden offices.
