Promenade de la Torse (Torso Park), Aix-en-Provence

Promenade de la Torse (Torso Park), Aix-en-Provence

Promenade de la Torse is a public park shaped by the Torse stream. It was developed from 1984 as nearby districts expanded. The layout follows the natural valley, with paths linking different areas. Along the stream is an artificial lake of about 0.25 hectares (around 26,900 square feet), now a central feature for visitors and wildlife.

The park is divided into several zones with different uses. Open lawns are used for informal sports such as football or frisbee, while other areas are more shaded, with mature trees and quieter paths. There are also dedicated facilities, including a fitness trail, outdoor exercise equipment, and a children’s playground. Small bridges cross the stream and link the various paths, allowing visitors to move easily across the park.

Vegetation plays an important role in the character of the space. The park includes a wide range of tree species such as plane trees, poplars, cypresses, maples, weeping willows, and oaks. Around the lake, aquatic plants support birds and fish, including ducks and swans. Today, the promenade is used daily by joggers, families, and dog walkers, functioning as an important green space for outdoor activity and relaxation.

Aix-end-Provence is known for its fountains. With more than 1,000 fountains, a tourist could spend weeks walking around the city without glimpsing them all. The fountains began appearing under the Roman empire when the Romans discovered Aix's natural thermal water source. They referred to the area as Aquae Sextiae or the Waters of Sextius.

In the Footsteps of Paul Cézanne

In the Footsteps of Paul Cézanne

Paul Cézanne, often called the “father of modern art” for bridging 19th-century post-impressionism and the birth of early modernism, caused a bit of a stir early in his career. While staying with Doctor Gachet in Auvers-sur-Oise, he painted his take on Manet’s Olympia-but with a twist. Aix-en-Provence Introduction Walking Tour

Aix-en-Provence Introduction Walking Tour

Aix-en-Provence may not have coastal views, but it compensates in style with its Roman bathwater and city logistics. Founded in 123 BC by Roman consul Gaius Sextius Calvinus, this southern French settlement-originally named Aquae Sextiae, which means “Waters of Sextius”-was built around its thermal springs and the promise of a good soak. Centuries later, the name was streamlined to “Aix”,...  view more
