Real Casa de Moneda (Royal Mill Mint), Segovia

The Royal Mill Mint is a historic site that dates back to the 16th century. Originally established as a royal mint in the late 1500s, it played a crucial role in coining currency during that time. Today, the Royal Mill Mint has been transformed into a museum that showcases the history of coins, industrial heritage, and the iconic Segovia aqueduct.

The construction of the coining house was commissioned by Philip II, the Spanish monarch, who recognized the advancements in rolling and coining techniques that utilized hydraulic wheels. Archduke Ferdinand of Tyrol played a vital role in procuring the necessary machinery and devices for the mint, bringing the latest technology to Spain. The coining house, designed by renowned architect Juan Herrera, became the first mechanized factory in the country.

Located between the Eresma River and the Garden of Poets, the Royal Mill Mint is a remarkable industrial building. Over the years, the structure fell into a state of disrepair, following its inactivity as a mint from 1968. However, a comprehensive rehabilitation process began in 1998 as part of a government collaboration protocol, with the actual execution of the project taking place between 2007 and 2011.

Originally sold and converted into a flour factory in 1878, the building served as a flour production facility until November 1967. Afterward, it was abandoned, sold to private owners, and finally acquired by the municipality in 1989. The rehabilitation efforts, initiated on February 14, 2007, aimed to restore the Royal Mill Mint to its former glory.

Segovia Introduction Walking Tour

They say the aqueduct of Segovia was built by the Devil himself. Allegedly, a woman grew tired of carrying water uphill and turned to an unusual “architect” for help. The deal they struck was rather competitive: the Devil would claim her soul only if he completed the aqueduct before dawn. He failed, leaving a gap in the structure that remains to this day.
