Rothko Chapel, Houston

Rothko Chapel, Houston

The Rothko Chapel is a unique and significant landmark in Houston. Founded by John and Dominique de Menil, the chapel is a non-denominational space that is both a work of modern art and a place of worship. The interior of the chapel is adorned with fourteen large-scale paintings by Mark Rothko, which are arranged on the walls in varying shades of black. The building's design and layout were largely influenced by the artist, with the chapel's octagonal shape inscribed within a Greek cross.

Located in the Montrose neighborhood, the Rothko Chapel is situated between the Menil Collection building and the Chapel of Saint Basil on the University of Saint Thomas campus. The chapel attracts over 110,000 visitors each year, who come to experience its unique combination of modern art and spiritual contemplation.

One of the most significant aspects of the Rothko Chapel is its non-denominational nature. According to Susan J. Barnes, the chapel was the world's first broadly ecumenical center, open to people of all religions and belonging to none. As a result, the Rothko Chapel has become a center for international cultural, religious, and philosophical exchanges, hosting colloquia, performances, and other events.

The Rothko Chapel's importance as a cultural and historical landmark was officially recognized in 2000, when it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
