Russische Gedächtniskirche (Memorial Church of Russian Honor), Leipzig

The Saint Alexi Memorial Church of Russian Honor, commonly known as the Russian Memorial Church in Leipzig, stands as a significant Russian Orthodox landmark, near the German Library. Built between 1912 and 1913, the church is a free replica of the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood in Moscow-Kolomenskoye, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. This architectural homage reflects the Russian tent-roof church style, first realized in the original 16th-century structure, with Leipzig's version executed as a plastered brick building and a spire made of reinforced concrete.

The church commemorates the approximately 22,000 Russian soldiers who fell during the Battle of the Nations in 1813, a pivotal conflict in the liberation of Germany. Designed by architect Vladimir Alexandrovich Pokrovsky, whose works span cities like Saint Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, and Moscow, the church was constructed in the Novgorod style with a distinctive 16-sided tent roof. Construction was consecrated on October 17, 1913, exactly 100 years after the Battle of the Nations and just a day before the dedication of the Monument to the Battle of the Nations.

The church complex includes a winter church and an upper church. Notable is the 18-meter-high, seven-row iconostasis, a gift from the Don Cossacks featuring 78 icons painted by Russian artist Luka Martyanovich Yemelyanov. This iconostasis was restored and reconsecrated by Bishop Tikhon on November 18, 2018. The church's 55-meter-high tower, crowned with a gilded onion dome in the traditional Russian style, is a striking feature visible from afar.

Within the church, visitors will find a small community library and a church museum. At the entrances to the Winter Church are two memorial plaques, written in German and Russian, honoring those who fought in the Battle of the Nations. Additionally, in 2003, a Bashkir memorial stone was placed approximately 60 meters west of the main entrance, commemorating the involvement of Bashkir fighters in the battle.
