Şadırvan Camisi (Şadırvan Mosque), Izmir
The Şadırvan Mosque, also known as Şadırvanaltı Mosque, is a historic structure located in the bustling Kemeraltı district of Izmir. Built in 1636 by Bıyıklıoğlu Mahmut, the mosque is named after the distinctive fountains (şadırvan) adjacent to and beneath it. Over the centuries, it has been a significant landmark along the old inner harbor, blending religious architecture with the surrounding commercial area.
The mosque features a minaret with a single balcony situated to the east and a library added in 1834 on its western side. Constructed primarily of marble, the mosque stands out for its elegant structure, reflecting the craftsmanship of its time. The Şadırvan Mosque has endured several fires and underwent extensive repairs, most notably in 1815 and 1883. In 1941, the minaret was carefully restored to preserve its historical integrity.
One of the mosque's unique characteristics is its adaptation to the urban environment. Without a traditional courtyard, it incorporates various shops on its lower floor, integrating seamlessly with the market atmosphere of Kemeraltı. To the west of the mosque lies a larger, eight-column fountain, which also supports the library above.
In 2022, an unfortunate incident saw the 65-year-old fountain in the square behind the mosque demolished by a shopkeeper. The local authorities swiftly intervened, announcing that those responsible would face penalties and that the fountain would be reconstructed to restore the mosque’s surroundings.
The Şadırvan Mosque remains an architectural and cultural treasure, representing the harmonious blend of commerce and spirituality that defines much of Izmir’s historic cityscape.
