Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga Springs
Saratoga Race Course, located on Union Avenue in Saratoga Springs, has been synonymous with premier Thoroughbred horse racing since its opening in 1863. Considered one of the oldest major sporting venues in the United States, it is the fourth oldest racetrack, following Freehold Raceway (1854), Fair Grounds Race Course (1852), and Pleasanton Fairgrounds Racetrack (1858). Despite its historical depth, Saratoga Race Course remains a vibrant epicenter of summer racing, drawing crowds from around the world.
The track's inaugural meet, organized by John Morrissey during the Civil War, lasted only four days but was so successful that a permanent grandstand was soon constructed. Over time, the racing season expanded significantly, from four weeks between 1962 and 1990 to its current format of 40 race days spread over six weeks, from mid-July through Labor Day in early September. Operated by the New York Racing Association, the course hosts some of the sport’s most prestigious events, including the renowned Travers Stakes.
Beyond racing, Saratoga Race Course offers a uniquely immersive experience. A tradition among visitors is the Clubhouse Porch breakfast, where guests can dine while watching horses warm up on the track. The venue’s charm extends to its shaded picnic grounds, elegant dining options, historic gazebos, and even a mineral spring. Recognized as an official Path Through History site, it has been named one of the world's top 10 oldest organized sporting venues by Sports Illustrated.
Whether you're a dedicated racing fan or just looking to soak in Saratoga’s signature atmosphere, the track is an integral part of the city’s cultural and social fabric-where history, sport, and tradition collide in a thrilling spectacle every summer.
