St. Gertraud Church, Passau

St. Gertraud Church, Passau

The Saint Gertraud Church was founded in 1301 as the hospital church of the Saint Gertraud Hospital. Its origins are deeply rooted in the medieval period. Over the centuries, it has undergone transformative changes, embodying both spiritual significance and artistic beauty.

In 1787, the ecclesiastical landscape of Passau experienced a shift as the inner city parish seat was relocated from Saint Severin to Saint Gertraud. This marked a turning point in the church's role within the community, solidifying its place as a pivotal spiritual hub. Eventually, in 1968, Saint Gertraud was officially recognized as a parish church, further cementing its importance within the religious framework of Passau-Innstadt.

Despite facing the trials of time, the Saint Gertraud Church endured a significant challenge during the town fire of 1809, which caused substantial damage to its structure. However, this adversity led to an opportunity for rebirth and renewal. In the years that followed, a collaborative effort led by architect Augustin Allgeyer and sculptor Christian Jorhan the Younger resulted in the church's reconstruction in the style of classicism. This architectural choice not only paid homage to the original design but also introduced new elements that harmonized with the evolving tastes of the era.

Inside the Saint Gertraud Church, a wealth of artistic treasures awaits those who enter its sacred space. Among the notable pieces, the late Gothic carving known as Severin's Madonna takes center stage, its intricately carved details a testament to the craftsmanship of the period. Another striking feature is the Gothic figure of Saint Severin, connecting the church to its history and patronage. The interior ambiance is further enriched by Jan Cossiers' oil portrait, "Adoration of the Shepherds," a captivating work that captures the essence of devotion and spirituality in its brushstrokes.
