St. Mark Lutheran Church, Toledo

St. Mark Lutheran Church, Toledo

St. Mark Lutheran Church was founded in 1884 by a group of German-speaking Lutherans from Saint Paul’s congregation who sought a place of worship closer to their homes on the city’s East Side. The original structure, a modest wood-frame chapel built around 1863, was replaced in 1916–17 by the current stone edifice after the congregation outgrew its first building.

The present church, designed by the Detroit firm Speer & Gehrke, was dedicated on 26 August 1917. Its Tudor-Gothic, cruciform plan features a 112-foot steeple, seating for approximately 900 worshippers, and a sanctuary surrounded by a wraparound balcony. The architectural layout includes impressive stained-glass installations, such as depictions of Jesus with children and the Mary and Martha narrative.

Since its early years, the church complex has expanded beyond the sanctuary. A parsonage was added in 1926 and an educational wing in 1951; records indicate the parsonage’s design was sketched in pencil by Toledo architect Carl C. Britsch.
