St. Michael's Episcopal Cathedral, Boise

St. Michael's Episcopal Cathedral, Boise

Designed in the Gothic Revival style by Henry Martyn Congdon, Saint Michael’s Episcopal Cathedral has played a central role in the region’s Episcopal history since its founding in 1864. It was the first Episcopal congregation established in the territories that would become Idaho, Montana, and Utah. The original church building, constructed in 1866, is now known as Christ Chapel and has been relocated to the Boise State University campus. The present cathedral was built between 1899 and 1900, funded in part by efforts from the church’s women’s auxiliary.

The rose window, called the Window of the Archangels, was installed in 1945, and a tower-part of the original plans-was finally completed in 1949. A Tiffany window was added to the east transept, while the spire and full transept were completed in 1980 and 1976, respectively. The cathedral is part of the Boise Capitol Area District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

For thousands of years the tree lined Boise River valley was home to the Shoshone people. They would meet here to trade with other tribes. The valley was congenial and the river full of salmon. It was a holy place for indigenous people.

The name "Boise" originated in the 1820s. The valley was thick with cottonwood trees. French Canadian trappers called it "La riviere boisee"...  view more
