St. Peter's by the Sea Episcopal Church, Sitka

Saint Peter's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church is one of Sitka's notable historic buildings and an example of Gothic Revival architecture adapted to Alaska's coastal environment. Completed in 1899, it was the first substantial Episcopal church built in Sitka, replacing the smaller spaces previously used for Episcopal services.

The church features a combination of wood and stone construction, with characteristic Gothic Revival elements such as pointed arches, a small bell tower with a pyramidal roof, and stone buttresses along the exterior walls. One of its most distinctive details is the rose window on the façade, which incorporates a Star of David design. This unusual feature reflects the broader tradition of symbolic and inclusive design found in many Episcopal churches.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, Saint Peter's by-the-Sea continues to function as an active place of worship. Beyond its architectural interest, the church represents the development of organized religious life in Sitka during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
