Statue To Sailors, Piraeus

Statue To Sailors, Piraeus

The golden bronze statue of the Unknown Sailor stands at the side of the entrance to the Church of St. Nicholas in Piraeus, commemorating the hundreds of sailors who never returned or died at sea far from home. The magnificent statue depicts a sailor in work clothes holding the rope used to tie a ship to a dock, gazing fearlessly into the infinity of the sea. The figure was created in bronze by the famous sculptor George Roussis, whose delicate artistry successfully depicts the sailor's skill in handling the ship, which the Greeks call Greek seamanship, and his struggle to master the seas. The statue was officially unveiled on April 21, 2019 in the presence of politicians, the Church and hundreds of people who came to pay tribute to all the sailors who perished at sea.

The statue pf the unknown Sailor overlooks the harbor, pays respect and honor to seamen still on patrol, still at sea. A sign of bravery to Hellenic Sea tradition. ***PH***
