Strasbourg National Theatre, Strasbourg

The National Theatre of Strasbourg is a grand building located on Place de la République in Strasbourg. Currently, it serves as the home for a theater group called the National Theatre of Strasbourg (Théâtre National de Strasbourg).

Originally, the National Theatre building was constructed to house the regional parliament of Alsace-Lorraine when the region was under German control after the Treaty of Frankfurt in 1871. The building was designed in the Neorenaissance style and was built between 1888 and 1889 by architects August Hartel and Skjold Neckelmann.

In 1919, when Alsace-Lorraine was returned to France, the French Government gave the building to the city of Strasbourg. The city then offered it to the Strasbourg music conservatory, following the request of the new director Guy Ropartz. He preferred this building over the Palais du Rhin located across the street.

During a bombing on September 25, 1944, the eastern wing of the building, which housed the Assembly Chamber, was destroyed by American forces. It was reconstructed between 1950 and 1957, and this time, the Assembly Chamber was replaced with a theater auditorium. The director of the National Theatre of Strasbourg at that time, Michel Saint-Denis, assigned the architectural work to Pierre Sonrel.

In 1995, the façade, roofing, and the entrance on Place de la République were officially designated as a Historic Monument.
