Teatro comunale Tina Di Lorenzo (Tina of Lorenzo Municipal Theater), Noto
The Tina of Lorenzo Municipal Theater, envisioned and designed by the skilled engineer Francesco Sortino, was officially inaugurated in 1870. The design of the Theatre draws inspiration from the renowned Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, reflecting the neoclassical architectural tastes of its era. The exterior of the theater features two stories and a façade adorned with Corinthian pilasters that frame a tetrastyle entrance portico. The decorative elements on the façade include intricately carved harps, violins, trumpets, and floral motifs, which subtly blend elements of the Neto Baroque style.
Upon entering the theater, visitors are greeted by a horseshoe-shaped auditorium with opulent detailing. The theater boasts four tiers of boxes adorned with gilded motifs set against a white background. Thirteen medallions in the second row of boxes are embellished with lyres, hippogriffs, and festoons in the third order, creating a lavish ambiance.
A significant feature in the theater's vestibule is an allegorical sandstone statue representing Music. This masterpiece was crafted by the skilled sculptor Giuliano Palazzolo.
The proscenium of the theater once displayed two exquisite tempera paintings on canvas, portraying the allegories of Lyrics and Prose. These artworks were created by Luigi Quériau from Messina or possibly by Santi Ferrara. Although they have been removed from the theater, they are now preserved in the Gallery of Modern Art in Noto.
The Tina Di Lorenzo Municipal Theatre continues to serve as a vibrant cultural hub in Noto. It hosts annual seasons of both classic and contemporary Italian theater, enriching the city's cultural landscape.
