Temple-Tifereth Israel / Maltz Performing Arts Center, Cleveland
The Temple-Tifereth Israel, established in 1950 by Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver to commemorate the synagogue's 100th anniversary, is a prominent landmark in Cleveland. The temple, now known as the Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center, underwent a significant transformation and now serves as a cultural hub within the campus of Case Western Reserve University.
Designed by architect Charles R. Greco, the building reflects a blend of Byzantine Revival and Romanesque Revival styles, featuring a striking hexagonal sanctuary made of Indiana limestone and marble. The structure is topped by a 90-foot yellow-tiled dome flanked by two smaller domes at the entrance. Inside, the sanctuary houses three exquisite stained glass windows by Arthur Szyk, depicting Gideon, Samson, and Judah Maccabee, as well as a grand W.W. Kimball pipe organ, whose specifications were curated by the temple's organist, Carleton H. Bullis.
The Temple, which served as the home for the Tifereth-Israel congregation until 1963, was later dedicated as the Silver Sanctuary in honor of Rabbis Abba Hillel Silver and Daniel Jeremy Silver. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 30, 1974.
In its current role as the Maltz Performing Arts Center, the venue houses Silver Hall, a 1,200-seat performance space that hosts concerts, lectures, and cultural events. It serves as the main venue for the university's music department, showcasing 19 ensembles, including a symphony orchestra, Baroque chamber ensembles, and the Case Concert Choir. The center also hosts the university's distinguished lecture series, Think Forum, and continues to serve the local Jewish community for special events and annual religious gatherings.
