Theatre des Celestins (Célestins Theater), Lyon

The Célestins Theater (Théâtre des Célestins) is a prominent cultural landmark located on Célestins Square (Place des Célestins) in Lyon. This theater boasts a rich history that spans over two centuries, making it one of the few theaters in France, along with the French Comedy and the Odeon Theater, to have been in continual use for more than 200 years.

The origins of the theater trace back to the Celestine order, which occupied a convent and church on the site from 1407 to 1789. The land, originally owned by the Templars, was seized and given to the order by Amedee VIII of Savoy. After the dissolution of the order in 1779, the Society of Célestins was formed in 1789. They embarked on an ambitious project to develop the land, which included the construction of a theater. The first theater on this site was inaugurated on 9 April 1792 and even hosted Napoleon I in 1802. A new theater, designed by Gaspard André, replaced it and was inaugurated on 1 August 1877.

Throughout its history, the Célestins Theater has been a hub for artistic excellence, hosting numerous notable actors such as Sarah Bernhardt, Jean Marais, Cécile Sorel, Jules Berry, Louis Jouvet, and Fernandel. The theater's golden era was under the artistic direction of Charles Moncharmont, who held the position for 35 years. During his tenure, the theater welcomed various illustrious personalities including Ludmilla and Georges Pitoeff, Charles Dullin, Elvire Popesco, Sacha Guitry, Madeleine Renaud, Pierre Dux, Jean Weber, as well as music-hall stars like Joséphine Baker, Mistinguett, and Maurice Chevalier.

Today, the Célestins Theater boasts a rich repertoire that includes contemporary and classical works, and it also plays a significant role in producing new theatrical works. The theater stands as a testament to the vibrant cultural and artistic history of Lyon, continuing to enchant audiences with its diverse and dynamic performances.
