Trinidad Theatre Workshop, Port of Spain

The Trinidad Theatre Workshop (TTW), founded in 1959 by Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott, his twin brother Roderick Walcott, and notable performers such as Beryl McBurnie, Errol Jones, and Stanley Marshall, is regarded as "The Flagship of the Theatre Movement in the Caribbean." Initially based at the Little Carib Theatre in Port of Spain, TTW has since become a cornerstone of Caribbean cultural expression, producing groundbreaking theatrical works and nurturing talent for over six decades.

TTW's inaugural season featured productions of The Blacks by Jean Genet, Eric Roach’s Belle Fanto, and The Road by Wole Soyinka. It also introduced the region’s first dedicated theatre season, showcasing Derek Walcott’s iconic plays, including The Joker of Seville, Ti-Jean and His Brothers, Dream on Monkey Mountain, and Henri Christophe. These productions helped define a Caribbean theatrical identity, blending local realities with universal themes.

Under Derek Walcott’s direction from 1959 to 1971, TTW not only showcased his works but also expanded its repertoire to include international playwrights like Tennessee Williams, Anton Chekhov, and Ntozake Shange, alongside Caribbean voices. The Workshop has also partnered with international companies such as the New York Shakespeare Festival Company, Negro Ensemble Company, and Stella Adler Studio of Acting, staging performances globally and fostering cross-cultural collaboration.

Whether hosting plays, concerts, art exhibits, or educational events, the Trinidad Theatre Workshop remains an enduring symbol of the Caribbean’s creative and cultural vitality.
