University of Zadar, Zadar

University of Zadar, Zadar

The University of Zadar holds the distinction of being the oldest institution of higher learning in Croatia, tracing its roots back to 1396 when the Dominicans founded the university as a theological seminary. Although it ceased operating as an independent university in 1807, it was reconstituted as a full-fledged, modern institution by Croatian Parliament in 2002, welcoming students again in early 2003.

Today, the University is the largest fully integrated university in the country, comprising 25 to 27 academic departments across the humanities, social sciences, marine studies, Germanistics, Italian studies, and more. With approximately 6,000 students enrolled and close to 640 academic and administrative staff.

The university’s seafront building is a fine example of neoclassical architecture-originally constructed at the turn of the 20th century to house the Lyceum of Saint Demetrius and now serving its academic role with stately grace. For tourists, its location offers more than just aesthetic appeal: nestled amid historic architecture, it's within walking distance of lively cafés, museums, and cultural venues.

Famous Hollywood film director Alfred Hitchcock was captivated by Zadar’s stunning coastline. He even ranked its sunset above that of Key West, Florida.
