Founded in 1836 by Roswell King, a wealthy businessman from the coast of Georgia, the city was established as a mill town and cotton manufacturing center. King, along with several founding families from the Georgia coast, built grand plantation homes and developed a thriving textile industry powered by the Chattahoochee River. During the Civil War, Union forces burned the mills, but many of the historic homes survived.
