During my recent trip to Croatia, I had the chance to explore the historic town of Trogir and the nearby Čiovo Island, two gems along the Dalmatian coast. From wandering the medieval streets and admiring Trogir’s stunning fortresses and cathedrals to relaxing on the beautiful beaches of Čiovo. This area is a perfect combination of history, culture, and coastal beauty. Trogir is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns on the Adriatic coast. The origins can be traced back to the 3rd century BC. It was founded by Greek colonists from the island of Vis. They named the settlement Tragurion, meaning “goat island.” It is a reference to the rural nature of the area at the time. Under Roman rule, Trogir developed into a small but prosperous urban centre, with marble streets, a rectangular city layout, and early Christian churches. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the town continued to flourish as Croat settlers arrived.
