Just ten miles from the glass towers of Midtown Atlanta lies a village that feels worlds apart. This Vinings guide explores a rare gem—an unincorporated community that has fiercely preserved its 19th-century soul while evolving into one of the most sophisticated pockets of the South.

The story of Vinings is one of ferries and rails. Long before the railroad arrived, the area was known as “Paces Crossroads,” named for Hardy Pace, who operated a critical ferry service across the Chattahoochee River. In the 1840s, the Western and Atlantic Railroad moved in to build a bridge, and the settlement was renamed for William Harrison Vining, the mechanic in charge of the project. Today, that history is alive in the very foundations of the village.

My husband and I most recently visited Vinings in February. Temperatures were in the high 50’s and quite comfortable. A visit to Vinings is enjoyable nearly all year, but river views and tree-lined streets will be even prettier in the spring, summer, or fall.
