1916 Memorial, Limerick

1916 Memorial, Limerick

The 1916 Memorial in Limerick stands as a tribute to the participants of the 1916 Easter Rising, a pivotal event in Irish history. Located at Sarsfield Bridge, this memorial is among several throughout the Republic of Ireland that honor those who lost their lives during the uprising. The project began in 1931, spearheaded by sculptor Albert Power, but it was his son, James Power, who completed the work in 1954 after significant fundraising efforts.

The memorial features bronze statues atop the structure, representing three local figures who played vital roles in the Easter Rising: Tom Clarke, Ned Daly, and Con Colbert. Alongside these statues is a figure symbolizing Mother Ireland, reinforcing the national significance of the uprising. The statues are set upon a stone plinth, which originally supported a statue of Viscount Fitzgibbon of Mountshannon House. Fitzgibbon's statue, commemorating his death in the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War, was destroyed by nationalists in 1930.

Unveiled on Sunday, May 27, 1956, the memorial was dedicated by Leslie de Barra, the wife of former Republican leader Tom Barry. In her address, she lauded the "weary and patient work" and the "courageous example" of those involved in the Rising. The 1966 Golden Jubilee commemoration of the Easter Rising saw Patrick Hillery representing the Irish government, where he reviewed the participating troops, highlighting the continued importance of the memorial.
