The Dockers Monument, Limerick

The Dockers Monument, Limerick

The Dockers Monument in Limerick is a permanent tribute to the hard-working men who worked on the docks in the city. Created by Limerick born artist Michael Duhan, the monument is a life-size bronze sculpture that reflects the physical work and the camaraderie that existed between the Dockers.

The Dockers Monument was unveiled in 2010, and former dockers, their families and descendants were invited to the official unveiling by Mayor Kiely on Friday, June 18. At the unveiling, they were presented with booklets detailing the history of Limerick Docks and the dockers.

Michael Duhan was selected to create the monument because of his personal connection to the dockers. His father was a docker and worked on ships, so Duhan was intimately familiar with the challenges and difficulties that the dockers faced every day.

The life-size bronze sculpture is a powerful representation of the dockers and their work. It accurately portrays the physical labor that was required to load and unload ships in the port of Limerick. At the same time, the sculpture also captures the sense of camaraderie that existed between the dockers. It's clear that these men were more than just co-workers – they were friends who relied on each other to get the job done.
