Abbey of Lerins, Cannes

Abbey of Lerins, Cannes

Lérins Abbey, situated on the picturesque island of Saint-Honorat off the coast of Cannes, is a Cistercian monastery with a rich history and a vibrant monastic community. The origins of the abbey can be traced back to the 5th century, while construction of the current monastery buildings commenced around 1073. The modern-day monks of Lérins Abbey are heirs to a long tradition, having been part of the island's community since 1869 when the first Cistercian monks arrived from Senanque Abbey near Avignon.

One of the unique aspects of Lérins Abbey is its fortified structure, which includes shops offering various monastic goods, allowing visitors to take a piece of their visit home. The abbey is renowned for its scenic beauty, surrounded by lush flora and fauna, and ancient chapels that dot the landscape, inviting exploration and reflection.

The monks at Lérins Abbey are not only caretakers of the spirit but also stewards of the land. They cultivate vineyards, producing wine and liqueur with meticulous care, resulting in seven distinguished vintages known for their excellence: Saint Salonius, Saint-Lambert, Saint Césaire, Saint Sauveur, Saint Cyprien, Saint Honorat, and Saint Pierre. These wines are celebrated as some of the finest French wines, crafted from a rigorous selection of grape varieties including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Mourvèdre, and Syrah.

Visitors to the abbey can enjoy guided tours, offering a chance to recharge spiritually, marvel at the beautiful design of the monastery, and immerse themselves in the tranquility of the surroundings. Although certain areas are reserved for the monastic community, the church remains open to all, with accommodations available for those wishing to extend their stay and fully embrace the serene and reflective life on the island.
