Adler Museum of Medicine, Johannesburg

Adler Museum of Medicine, Johannesburg

The Adler Museum of Medicine was founded in 1962 by Dr. Cyril and Mrs. Esther Adler, who amassed an impressive private collection of medical and pharmacological artifacts. This collection has grown to include more than 40,000 items, offering a comprehensive portrayal of the evolution of medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy over the centuries. In June 1974, the museum was officially entrusted to the University of the Witwatersrand.

In addition to the captivating medical historical artifacts on display, the museum houses an array of documents, sculptures, paintings, videos, as well as philatelic and medallion collections, all of which are related to the history of medicine. The museum also boasts a library containing rare books and a reference library dedicated to the history of medicine.

Visitors to the museum can explore reconstructions of various settings from the early 20th century, including a Johannesburg pharmacy, a dental surgery, a doctor's consulting room, and an optometry display from that era. The history of Western medicine is presented alongside exhibits showcasing alternative medical modalities, such as acupuncture, Chinese medicine, Tibb (Unani), and Ayurveda. Furthermore, the museum introduces visitors to the latest alternative therapy, energy medicine, providing insights into its practices.

Highlighting a significant facet of African medicine, the museum features displays centered around traditional healing, including an African herb shop and a depiction of a patient consulting with a sangoma (traditional healer).

The Adler Museum of Medicine offers a range of educational opportunities, including regular public lectures, guided tours, specialized tours for school students, film screenings, temporary exhibitions on various topics, and comprehensive facilities for teaching and researching medical history.
