Aegean Maritime Museum, Mykonos
The Aegean Maritime Museum, situated in Mykonos, Greece, was founded by George M. Drakopoulos in 1983 as a non-profit organization. The museum, housed in a 19th-century building in the Tria Pigadia area of the town center, opened its doors to the public in 1985. Its primary objective is to preserve, promote, and study Greek maritime history and tradition, with a particular emphasis on the Aegean Sea's merchant-ship history.
The museum is distinguished as the first Greek institution to restore historical exhibits to their original design and construction. The Armenistis Lighthouse, constructed in 1890, stands in the museum garden, and two ships, Thalis o Milesios (built in 1909) and Evangelistria (built in 1940), are located in the Naval Tradition Park in Palaio Faliro, Athens. These exhibits are living restorations.
The garden of the Aegean Maritime Museum is home to a collection of ancient sailors' marble gravestones collected from the nearby islands of Mykonos and Delos. George M. Drakopoulos, the museum's founder and chairman, received numerous awards, including the Athens Academy Award and the World Ship Trust's Award for Individual Achievement, for his contributions to the museum's establishment.
