African American Museum, Fresno
Welcome to the African American Historical & Cultural Museum of the San Joaquin Valley, a hub of culture, creativity, and community pride. Founded almost 30 years ago by local leader Jack Kelley and a dedicated board, this nonprofit museum was born from a passion to document and honor the voices and achievements of African Americans in the Central Valley. Located amid Fresno’s historic mural district, it stands today as the premier institution of its kind in the region.
Inside, visitors encounter a dynamic blend of permanent and rotating exhibits. The lower gallery highlights the local impact of African Americans-stories that span civil rights struggle, community leadership, education, sports, and the arts. Upstairs, themed rooms immerse you in the everyday experiences of black life, from medical professionals and educators to local church legacy, youth, and mural art celebrating Black heritage. Noteworthy features include an archive of donated memorabilia, vintage Ebony magazines, stained-glass artworks, quilts, and a children’s library adorned with a vibrant “From Africa to America” mural.
Under the leadership of Executive Director Nefesha Yisra’el, the museum has been revitalized. Emerging exhibits like “Black History Into the Future” bring together local student art and works by professional artists, reflecting Fresno’s evolving cultural landscape. Beyond exhibitions, the museum hosts theater performances, music events, panel discussions, and monthly ArtHop participation, forming a vibrant cultural anchor for the community.
Whether you're an art lover, history buff, educator, or family traveler, the African American Museum offers an enriching, intimate experience. Tours are available by appointment Tuesday through Saturday, and admission is modest-often donation-based-making it an accessible stop on your Fresno itinerary.
