Airport and Stampe en Vertongen Museum, Antwerp

Airport and Stampe en Vertongen Museum, Antwerp

Inaugurated in 2001, the Stampe and Vertongen Museum is located within the premises of Antwerp Airport. Open for just three hours over the weekend, you can make a very personal visit to the Museum with your own group of 20 people or more on a weekday with prior arrangement with the management.

The Museum pays tribute to aviation pioneers Jean Stampe and Maurice Vertongen who started the first flying school at Deurne. The same site went on to become a factory for manufacturing the SV4 aircraft. Known for being Belgium’s greatest contribution to aviation, these aircraft served the Belgian Air Force till as recently as 1978. Today, the area is known as the Deurne Airport and for the Stampe and Vertongen Museum located to the left of the airport’s main entrance.

The Museum displays various specimens of the ‘Stampe’, the training aircraft for generations of Belgian pilots and many different aircraft of the World War I era. In addition, you can also see some work on airplanes being done at the Museum’s workshop.

Over a weekend in May, the Museum organizes a ‘Stampe Fly In’ featuring the SV4 aircraft from all over Europe. You can also use the Museum for photo shoots or even your wedding ceremony by speaking to the management beforehand. The Museum preserves the history of aviation in Antwerp and documents the development of Antwerp airport through series of pictures. A must visit for an aviation fan.
