Ala Moana Beach Park, Honolulu

Ala Moana Beach Park, Honolulu

Ala Moana Beach Park is a public park located on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, situated between Waikiki and downtown Honolulu. Covering an area of 100 acres (0.40 square kilometer), this park features a wide stretch of golden-sand beach that spans over half a mile (800 meters). Interestingly, this beach is artificial in origin and was created in the 1950s when sand was deposited here as a means of disposing of dredged earth by the owner of the Dillingham Dredging Company.

One notable aspect of this beach is the consistently calm water, thanks to the protection provided by an outer reef. This attribute makes it an ideal spot for long-distance swimmers and families with young children. The park boasts a 25-foot-deep (7.6 meters) swimming channel and a former boat channel that was dredged out of the reef.

It's worth noting that the ocean floor at Ala Moana Beach Park drops off rapidly, so individuals who are not experienced swimmers should exercise caution. The park also offers ample green spaces, featuring banyan and palm trees, making it an excellent location for picnics, barbecues, various ball games, and running. Visitors can take advantage of amenities such as lifeguards, showers, restrooms, phones, tennis courts, picnic tables, food concessions, and a music pavilion.

Ala Moana Beach Park is a beloved destination among the residents of Honolulu. During the weekends, many families come here to enjoy picnicking, swimming, and quality time together. Additionally, it is conveniently located next to "Magic Island," where numerous cultural events take place.
