Kewalo Basin, Honolulu

Kewalo Basin, Honolulu

Kewalo Basin is a hub for commercial boating and plays a vital role in Honolulu's marine economy. It's a base for the city's commercial fishing operations and hosts boats that offer tourist services around Hawaii. The land originally belonged to Ihu, a gift from Kamehameha I, and was later passed down to Kamakeʻe and Jonah Piikoi, her husband. Alongside the harbor is a small, public beach area, part of the larger Ala Moana Beach Park. This spot is popular for swimming, picnics, and enjoying the scenic views.

For many years, Kewalo Harbor has been a key part of the Ward neighborhood's history. Known earlier as the Kukuluae‘o fishery, it was sold to the Hawaiian territory in 1913 by the Victoria Ward family. Now, The Howard Hughes Corporation is in charge of managing Kewalo Harbor. This management includes looking after the fishery at Kukulae‘o, an important aspect for the Ward area. The harbor is located right next to Ward Village, an emerging mixed-use community with retail spaces, residences, and public areas designed for walking.

As the manager of Kewalo Harbor, The Howard Hughes Corporation is enhancing the facilities. These improvements include better security, dock repairs, and marketing efforts to draw more visitors to the harbor and integrate it with the Ward Village. Their goal is to support the businesses at the harbor, create a vibrant waterfront space, and foster a sense of community, linking Ward Village from the mountains to the sea.
